Register for The Invasive Vine Action Workshop
February 28th, 2011To conclude this year’s Earth Month, Groundwork Hudson Valley is hosting an invasive vine workshop, and we would love for you to take part. Stakeholders along the Saw Mill River are invited to help develop a long-term action plan to eliminate the dangerous invasive vines that are destroying native habitat. These species are choking our ecosystem and compromising the health of our trees. Dying trees pose a threat to the adjacent parkway and trailway, the people that use them, and the river habitat that plants and animals depend on for their survival.
DATE: Thursday, April 28, 2011 (rain date 5/4)
TIME: 10am-2pm
LOCATION: Farragut Avenue Restoration Site & Westchester Manor Hall, Hastings-On-Hudson, NY
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Community members, volunteers, students, Westchester County Parks Officials, NY State DOT officials, conservationists, ecologists, municipal leaders, local landscapers, and business owners. If everyone works a little towards solving the problem, we can achieve a lot.
Register for The 2nd Annual Great Saw Mill River Clean-Up!
February 28th, 2011Last year, over 250 people gathered at 10 sites along the Saw Mill River to remove trash and restore habitat.
We need your help to make this event a resounding success again this year! Be part of the group of volunteers (families, civic and youth groups, businesses) to join or lead cleanup crews, bagging tons of trash from streets, parks and streams, and connecting with neighbors and the outdoors. It’s fun, practical, meaningful, and easy. You gather some friends and Groundwork will help you find a site near you and provide all of the tools, supplies, and training you need. Do your cleanup, leave the bags for the local highway department, and report your cleanup results to SMRC.
Register by May 1st to have your group name included on our event T-Shirt and get a few for free!
Groundbreaking Ceremony for Daylighting in Larkin Plaza! Dec. 15th 12noon
December 8th, 2010The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Daylighting of Larkin Plaza is scheduled for Wednesday, December 15th at 12pm. Please come and celebrate this momentous occasion with us! Plans for the daylighting of The Saw Mill River in Larkin Plaza have been in the works for many years. We are excited to finally be breaking ground on this project that we believe will greatly benefit the environment of downtown Yonkers for all stakeholders-businesses, residents, fish, plants, birds, and more!
Yonkers City Council Approves Capital Budget which Includes the Saw Mill River Daylighting Park at Larkin Plaza!
November 19th, 2010On Tuesday, November 9, the Yonkers City Council approved the funding to bring back the Saw Mill River to the light of day, hence “daylighting” at Larkin Plaza in downtown Yonkers. This project has been in the works for a very long time.
The US Army Corps of Engineers first covered up this portion of the river in the early 1920s for both flood control and water quality management (the river had become very polluted). In the early 1990’s in the US Army Corps of Engineers’ “Reconnaissance Study,” one of the habitat restoration projects mentioned was to uncover, or “daylight” the Saw Mill River at Larkin Plaza! Full circle!
Daylighting Groundbreaking is expected in early December and we will INVITE YOU ALL! More information about the history of the project and Groundwork Hudson Valley’s involvement will be coming soon.
First Annual Great Saw Mill River Clean-Up a huge success!
November 1st, 2010Groundwork Hudson Valley and The Saw Mill River Coalition would like to issue a great, big “Thank you” to everyone who helped make our first Annual Great Saw Mill River Clean-Up a huge success!
Over 250 volunteers at 11 sites along the Saw Mill River removed hundreds of bags of trash and piles of debris from in and along the river, making it a better place for the plants, animals, and insects that call it home; revitalizing a major urban and suburban greenway; and preventing all that trash from being flushed into the Hudson River and then to the Atlantic Ocean. The Clean-Up was a wonderful example of citizens taking action on a small, local level to achieve large positive effects that start in our own backyards, but reach much farther.
Great job, but we still need your help! Please take a few moments to do the following:
