Climate Change & Resilience Distance Learning Module
Groundwork Hudson Valley has developed a distance-learning module based upon its successful climate change resiliency education program created under funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Literacy Grant program. This module includes:
- Global, Local, Coastal – A Teacher’s Guide – a 100+ page comprehensive curriculum on climate change science, impact, and resilience.
- A new Web-Application containing useful tools to engage students in climate education such as videos, graphs, slideshows of pictures from around the world, and interactive labs/widgets.
- A recorded webinar showcasing how to use the Web-application in coordination with the curriculum, best-practices on teaching about climate change, and NOAA data interpretation tools and maps.
On November 8, 2018, we co-hosted the distance learning module webinar with our partners at the Center for Urban River at Beczack (CURB). A recording of the distance-learning module webinar is available to view below, along with the Web-App link and the downloadable Teacher’s Guide in pdf form. The Web-application was created by computer programmer, Nicholas Ericksen, who we teamed up with in 2016 when he worked with IAC Applications.
The Global, Local, Coastal curriculum includes an overview on the subject, a full glossary of terms, tips on navigating the Web-app, and five climate change units, each with an introduction, Next Generation Science Standards, associated Web-app resources, and many individual lesson plans. Educators can choose lessons from the Global-Local-Coastal curriculum a la carte based on their individual classroom needs, adopt the whole curriculum, or use some lessons to supplement a visit to our Science Barge or EcoHouse experiential learning sites. The SLC Center for the Urban River at Beczack. All segments are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards with target grades ranging from 6-12.
