This fall, join scientists and nature lovers alike to celebrate the diversity of life on the Saw Mill River.

Volunteer

How to get involved:

Please contact Emily or Ann-Marie to discuss volunteer opportunities and to sign up!

What you’ll do:

Writing:

We’d love to have a few articles written about scientists (interesting bios), biodiversity, the probable species we’ll find, and the research that’s been done to date on species (fish, birds, plant life).

Event Day Set-up & Run-about:

We’ll need people to help set up tables, get food organized, check in scientists, sign up people for nature walks & the Junior BioBlitz. We’ll work in 2-4 hour shifts: afternoon (Friday), morning & afternoon (Saturday). We’re flexible—tell us when you can help.

Help with Opening ceremonies on the Science Barge:
Friday, September 25th, 4:30- 5:30pm

We could use help setting up at 3:30 and cleaning up after the event. This involves arranging the wine and cheese, tidying up, greeting people as they arrive. 3-5 people.

Computer Data Entry
Saturday, September 26th, 12pm-5pm

We need lots of help all day compiling the scientist’s tally as they bring them in. 3:00-5:00pm is greatest need. Scientists will begin giving us data sheets around 12 noon on Saturday, and then will come in at 4pm with EVERYTHING! We’ll need up to 10 people who can enter their data so we can have our results at 5 PM!

Junior BioBlitz, Pace University
Saturday, September 26th, 12pm- 5pm

We could use some volunteers to help us run the Junior BioBlitz activities. This job entails working with children to collect and identify species and inspect them under a microscope. Volunteers do not have to commit to the entire 5 hour program.

Nature Walk, Pace University
10:30am-12pm

We would love to involve some student naturalists or professors in our nature walk. This person could lead the nature walk, or come along as an additional guide.

Lecture series and round-table discussions on Biodiversity
1pm-5pm

We could use the help of professors to encourage their students to attend the lectures and participate in roundtable discussions. We would love for an interested professor or student to give a lecture or facilitate a roundtable.

Closing Ceremony and Thank-you reception
5pm-6:30pm

Help is needed to usher people in for the closing ceremony when the final tally of species will be announced and to coordinate with catering for the Thank-You reception. 3-5 people

Sponsor a Scientist!

Thank you to those who donated to the scientists who identified over 650 different species within the Saw Mill River Watershed!

We ask you to please continue your support so that we can further connect communities to the biodiversity in their own backyards. We hope to organize another Junior BioBlitz after the great success of the September event.
