Local Knowledge, Local Solutions: Yonkers’ Climate Efforts

Yonkers, a city with unique geography and diverse communities, faces serious problems with extreme heat, especially in the southwest area. Past policy mistakes, including systemic racism and redlining, have left this part of the city with poor infrastructure, high unemployment, and ongoing environmental issues. These problems make the community more vulnerable to extreme heat and flooding. The city’s geography, with the Hudson River on the west and three rivers running north-south creating steep hills, makes the situation even more complicated.
Addressing Local Challenges with Local Knowledge and Expertise
Addressing the risks posed by climate change requires collective action at all levels, including local communities and governments. Engaging residents and the communities that make up the city in climate action efforts is essential. It also requires inclusivity and equity to ensure everyone has a voice and an active role. Inclusive community engagement is a powerful tool for achieving our environmental and climate goals while also creating sustainable, equitable, and resilient societies.

The Role of Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force
In Yonkers, inclusive community engagement has been pivotal in developing the city’s first-ever climate action plan. Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force, comprising 30 diverse community members, played a crucial role in this planning and decision-making process. The City of Yonkers Office of Sustainability engaged the Task Force and gathered valuable feedback and insights from residents, shaping the goals and strategies of the climate action plan through a context-specific and equity-focused lens. This engagement has built trust and fostered a sense of ownership among residents, critical for the long-term success of the plan.
Enhancing Climate Resilience through the CCRUN Program
The Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN), supported by Rutgers University, Columbia University, and other partners, has been essential in enhancing climate resilience in urban areas like Yonkers. Through the CCRUN program, Groundwork Hudson Valley extended its community engagement efforts and continued involving diverse community members in decision-making processes. The grant supported these community and municipal engagement efforts and ensured that climate solutions are sustainable, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all residents.

A Comprehensive and Inclusive Climate Action Plan
The impacts of climate change are not uniform; certain communities face unique challenges. The Yonkers Climate Action Plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to address issues such as flooding, extreme heat, and fossil fuel reduction. This plan focuses on being equitable and inclusive, making sure that the needs of vulnerable groups, like low-income families and communities facing environmental injustices, are taken into account with specific resilience measures.
Empowering and Educating the Community
Groundwork Hudson Valley’s mission throughout this two-year process has been, and continues to be, building resilience, reducing disparities, and ensuring that climate solutions are accessible and beneficial to all residents. To achieve this, Groundwork organized various workshops, educational programs, and outreach initiatives. These efforts raised awareness, educated residents about the impacts of climate change, and empowered community members to take action.
What’s Next? Moving From Planning to Implementation
With the climate action plan now in place, the next phase involves moving from planning to implementation. This transition will focus on putting the plan’s strategies into action to achieve tangible results. Key initiatives will include:
- Implementing projects to improve stormwater management, reduce urban heat islands, and enhance green spaces.
- Continuing and expanding educational workshops and outreach to ensure ongoing community involvement and support.
- Strengthening collaborations with local organizations, businesses, and government agencies to leverage resources and expertise.

Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force 2.0
The next phase of the Task Force includes the formation of two working groups to tackle specific issues:
- Air Quality Working Group: Focuses on monitoring and raising awareness on air quality across the city.
- Tree Canopy Expansion Working Group: Dedicated to increasing tree cover to combat heat islands and improve urban resilience.
The success of these efforts depends on the ongoing commitment and active participation of everyone, from Yonkers residents to the city government, with help from Groundwork Hudson Valley and partners like CCRUN. Yonkers’ experience shows how important community involvement is in creating and carrying out this important plan. As we face the challenges of climate change, it’s crucial to recognize and prioritize the vital role our communities play in building resilience and sustainability.
