Groundwork Hudson Valley Releases Comprehensive Report on Nature-Based Solutions to Address Flooding in the Saw Mill River Watershed
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yonkers, NY – Groundwork Hudson Valley (GWHV) has released an in-depth report, “Case Studies for Nature-Based Solutions within the Saw Mill River Watershed”, detailing strategic approaches to mitigate flooding and enhance climate resilience across Westchester County and the Hudson Valley. As climate change intensifies, these solutions offer timely, science-based ways to protect critical community infrastructure.
The report spans GWHV’s work from 2023 to 2024, highlighting collaborations with key partners, including the Saw Mill River Watershed Advisory Board (SWAB), the New School’s Urban Systems Lab (USL), and Biohabitats. The report identifies nature-based solutions (NBS) like floodplain restoration, bank stabilization, and site regrading as essential strategies that, when combined with gray infrastructure such as culvert expansion, can significantly reduce flooding and improve local ecosystems.
“Nature-based solutions are vital in creating resilient communities and effective flood management systems,” said Oded Holzinger, Executive Director at Groundwork Hudson Valley. “When integrated with conventional infrastructure, these solutions can significantly reduce flood risks, improve water quality, and create healthier habitats for local wildlife and people alike.”
The report showcases four priority sites in Westchester County:
- Hastings-on-Hudson: Boutillier’s Brook Northern Spurs and Farragut Parkway/SMR Parkway Intersection
- Greenburgh: Rum Brook/Saw Mill River Confluence
- Mount Pleasant: Wetland adjacent to the Water District Field
Each case study includes a detailed analysis of current conditions and conceptual intervention designs. Community engagement, such as citizen science platforms like MyCoast, is emphasized for effective flood management and increased awareness.
The report’s findings apply to other flood-prone areas in the Hudson Valley, providing a framework for municipalities to develop tailored NBS projects. Access the full report here. Contact Groundwork Hudson Valley for more information on projects and partnerships.
