We are also planting trees throughout Southwest Yonkers in areas we find are lacking adequate tree coverage. Learn more about both of these efforts below!

The Ecological Benefits of Expanding Yonkers’ Tree Canopy
Trees in Yonkers help make our city healthier, safer, and more livable. They offer critical benefits, including:
-
Cooling the city: Trees can lower air temps by up to 9℉ through transpiration and reduce surface heat by 20℉.
-
Saving energy: Shade from trees cuts air conditioning use and lowers utility bills.
-
Improving air quality: Trees trap pollutants, acting as natural air filters.
-
Reducing flooding: Trees absorb rainwater, helping prevent floods near rivers and low-lying areas.
-
Supporting wildlife: Trees provide habitat for birds, squirrels, and other urban species.
Research shows that urban trees also boost mental health, reduce stress, and strengthen community ties—while lowering risks of asthma, obesity, and even lung cancer.

Tree Inventory of SW Yonkers: What is the Health of the Urban Forest in Yonkers?
Groundwork Hudson Valley is working to expand the tree canopy in Southwest Yonkers, focusing on environmental justice neighborhoods like Nodine Hill, Getty Square, and Radford.
A tree inventory records details like a tree’s location, species, size, and health. Groundwork’s inventory includes both street and private property trees to better understand their ecological value—like providing shade, cooling sidewalks, and improving air quality.
The data helps us measure benefits such as carbon captured, stormwater filtered, and energy savings. This insight supports smarter planning for a greener, healthier Yonkers.
As of September 1, 2024, over 1,000 trees have been inventoried by the Green Team, Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force, volunteers, and staff. Explore our tree inventory dashboard!
