Yonkers Climate Action Plan Unveiled, Groundwork Hudson Valley Takes Charge with Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force

In a bold step towards combating climate change and fostering a sustainable future, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano unveiled the city’s comprehensive Yonkers Climate Action Plan. Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force, a group of 30 diverse individuals, played a critical role in the planning and development of the plan.

The Climate Safe Yonkers Task Force, comprised of residents, business owners, artists, youth, seniors, and local leaders, has been actively engaged in the development of this groundbreaking plan over the past year. Their dedication culminated in the unveiling of the strategy, which outlines actionable steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy, and enhance climate resilience across Yonkers. Groundwork Hudson Valley’s expertise and extensive network of community partnerships have proven invaluable in creating a holistic approach that addresses the unique needs and challenges faced by Yonkers and the Hudson Valley region.

The Yonkers Climate Action Plan lays out a roadmap for how we can address issues like flooding, extreme heat, and fossil fuel reduction. But equally as important, it ensures that equity and inclusion through community engagement are at the center of our approach, serving as a model for other cities across the state and the nation. This demonstration of political will plays a vital role in shaping policies and practices that support climate action, sending a powerful message that addressing climate change is a top priority.
