Wings Over the Hudson: EagleFest 2024 Unites Community for Nature’s Celebration with Groundwork & Teatown
Groundwork Hudson Valley, in partnership with Teatown Hudson River, hosted EagleFest 2024 in Yonkers, marking its return after three years and coinciding with Teatown Hudson River’s 20th anniversary. The event took place at Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Science Barge, situated on the Hudson River facing the Palisades, drawing attendees from Riverdale, Hastings, Manhattan, New Jersey, and Yonkers to spot and observe birds from the region.
On Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, nearly 100 individuals gathered to partake in this celebration of nature. While only one bald eagle was spotted, participants enjoyed diverse avian sightings including peregrine falcons, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks, buffleheads, fish crows, common ravens, Canada geese, and ring-billed gulls, among many others.
Up the river in Croton Point, NY, Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Green Team attended Teatown’s EagleFest celebration. They explored a human-sized eagle’s nest and engaged in educational workshops on birds and wildlife. A highlight was the release of a falcon, providing an educational and entertaining experience for all.
Understanding eagles’ migration patterns is crucial to appreciating their role in the region’s ecosystem. Bald eagles, in particular, migrate southward during winter to find suitable feeding and nesting sites. The Hudson River valley serves as a vital stopover, providing food sources and safe havens. At EagleFest, participants learned from expert spotters Michael Bochnik and Ted Kavanagh about eagles’ migratory journeys.
After being on the brink of extinction, the bald eagle’s return to the Hudson Valley is one of the great conservation success stories of our time. Once endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, and hunting, bald eagles have rebounded significantly, with over 70,000 individuals now soaring across North America. Their resurgence symbolizes the power of collective action in protecting endangered species and restoring ecosystems.
As apex predators, eagles play a crucial role in regulating prey populations, maintaining ecological balance, and preserving biodiversity. EagleFest 2024 celebrated more than nature; it was a celebration of the community and ecological richness of the Hudson River Valley.
